The purpose of this study was to empirically scrutinize the effects of various team-based status factors on performance consequences of professional basketball teams competing in the Korean Basketball League (KBL). Based on status theory, out research categorize basketball team status in terms of team capabilities, chemistry, domestic players’ efficiencies, and team payroll. For the assessment of the study, we constructed a longitudinal panel data of 180 team observations (10 teams for 18 seasons) and 2,722 players comprising KBL for 18 seasons (1997/1998 to 2014/2015). Our final panel sample eligible for empirical testing is manifested with 150 teams and 2,277 players due to data availability. We secure methodological rigor through employing Hausman test which leads to random effect Generalized Least Square (GLS) regression analysis to examine our research model. Our empirical findings reveal that there exist positive relationship between higher team-based status (team capabilities, team chemistry, domestic players’ efficiencies, and team payroll) and performance of professional basketball teams in Korea.
